If ever a game deserved a new lease of life, a chance to throw off the shackles of hardware surpassed by technology, it is Bloodborne. For Bloodborne to just stay as a PS4 title in 2021 feels like no-one wins. Six years on, however, that task is over and, even more than that, the commercial argument has flipped: Bloodborne on PC is near-guaranteed to be a smash. I bought my PS4 for Bloodborne, and many others will say the same. The overall aesthetic is fantastic and looks like it could have been released in 1998. Menus for options, entering the player’s name, and choosing the initial starting statistics look like they were ripped right out of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. The final effect is highly reminiscent of the early 3D worlds that graced the PSX, particularly early horror titles like Resident Evil and Silent Hill. There are a plethora of graphical options as well, including enabling dithering (another PSX staple), support for multiple resolutions, and a CRT filter that adds more than simple scanlines to the image. However, the introductory cinematic is fully intact, rendered in glorious PSX-era polygons with all the jankiness and warping the console is infamous for. With story and world flowing seamlessly into the mechanics, Bloodborne oozes flavor from the first slash to the final blow. The demake currently encompasses only the first area of the game, Yharnam. Bloodborne is a compelling perfection between gameplay, atmosphere, and everything in between. This can only be played on Windows at the moment, though it does support controller input. To be clear, the demake is a PC game and cannot be translated to the PSX, either physically or via emulation. Finally, their prayers have been answered… sort of.īloodbornePSX is a fan-made “demake” of the action RPG made to replicate a release on the original PlayStation (PSX).
